There's something unsettling about a rather historically accurate movie that has no consideration of accents whatsoever. You see a good visual and musical portrayal of medieval times, which certainly required a degree of effort and research, but then almost all of the main characters have the strongest American accent! The part of the 3rd act where Jodie Comer (fantastic as usual) is alone and surrounded by characters who have various real British accents was the only part that worked in making you completely into the film. Matt Damon in an 80s mullet and Ben Affleck with a blonde goatee and zero capability of doing a good accent (along with Adam Driver, unfortunately) was so distracting I kept forgetting it was a historical drama inspired by a true story, and a pretty compelling one as well. Have men always been incapable of understanding when women are uncomfortable and feeling unwell? Have they always ignored consent? It certainly does a good job at showing how miserable everyone was during that time. It could have been excellent, but it falls short due to details which could have been easily perfected.
Such a feel good movie with a great cast and a great message despite having a rather simple storyline.
It's a movie that I knew was going to be a comfort film of mine even before I had finished it, one I'll put on whenever I'll need something beautiful and uplifting.
I'll definitely re-watch it in the future, and as a quirky person myself (who was often bullied, and often felt out-of-place and misunderstood) this is a film I wish I had seen as a child!
Inspiring and beautifully shot, one of those unpretentious gems I'll always be recommending.
It made me smile, laugh out loud, cry, think about how much I love my friends and family... all in about an hour and a half. Just lovely.
