  • Tigers Are Not Afraid - Film Review

Tigers Are Not Afraid is a fantasy crime horror film directed by Issa López. The film follows two plot lines that do flow together. One plot is that of a group of orphans led by Shine (portrayed by Juan Ramón López) who steal and do whatever they can to survive while staying away from the Cartels. The other plot follows Estrella (portrayed by Paola Lara), a young girl whose mother goes missing and is able to see the ghost of those murdered by the local cartel.

The film is more of a fantasy crime film than a horror film. There are not many horror elements outside of Estrella seeing ghosts and I only was slightly scared from one jump-scare scene in the film (the first time a ghost was shown).

I really enjoyed the underlying story which depicts the forgotten individuals hurt by the Cartels - the orphans of those killed. I thought this was a new portrayal of the issue which was not something I had seen really depicted in this genre of film before. The group of orphans is also well portrayed with Morro (portrayed by Nery Arredondo) being the most likable of the group.

However, I thought the film was a little lacking in the plot line. The Cartel themselves seem a bit too dumb and they are getting outmaneuvered by a group of kids. I would just expect a little more from the gang that controls the local territory. I also don't think the Cartel plot is fully explored. They could've been replaced by just a group of guys and it wouldn't have changed the plot as their ties to the cartel has minimal significance to the overall issue.

Overall, this is a decent fantasy crime film with small elements of horror that is worth the watch although not a stand out film - 6/10.

  • Outlaw King - Film Review

Outlaw King is a historical action drama directed by David Mackenzie. The film follows the Scottish King Robert the Bruce (portrayed by Chris Pine) during the Scottish Wars of Independence fought against King Edward I (portrayed by Stephen Dillane) and later his son Prince Edward (portrayed by Billy Howle) from 1304-1307.

The film is a good, albeit not great, historical action film. The battles themselves were well depicted and directed. However, I found the story itself to be a little boring. There is not much character development outside of the battle scenes. You don't learn much of Robert the Bruce's background other than he previously fought King Edward I, lost, and is trying again. James Douglas (portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has a pretty important role as Robert's right hand man but also has little character development outside of learning that he seeks his land back. Thus, while I thought the acting and action sequences were well done, the overall plot was a bit underwhelming. - 6/10.

  • The Postcard Killings - Film Review

The Postcard Killings is a crime thriller directed by Danis Tanovic and based on based on the novel of the same name written by Liza Marklund and James Patterson. The film follows Jacob Kanon (portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a retired NYPD detective who begins to investigate the murder of his daughter while she was on her honeymoon. Along the way, Jacob recruits the help of American journalist Dessie Lombard (portrayed by Cush Jumbo), who is based in Sweden, which is where they believe the murderer(s) are. The murderers send out postcards prior to every murder and portray the murders to depict famous paintings.

This film is an interesting crime thriller as it does have a turn on who the murderer(s) are. The identity of the individual(s) is not known until halfway through the film which I appreciated. Thus, I enjoyed the overall plot of figuring out the crime and trying to prevent further crimes from occurring.

However, I thought the acting itself in the film was pretty poor. Jacob never really felt authentic to me and his emotional scenes felt pushed onto me. His ex-wife Valerie (portrayed by Famke Janssen) is barely utilized and only appears in a few scenes in the film. Thus, while the plot was interesting, the actors felt underwhelming.

With that being said, it's not a terrible film and might be worth the watch if you are into crime thrillers but likely isn't a memorable film - 4/10.
