  • The Parents are the Heart

This is not a true crime documentary- there's little to no insight into the investigation and how they caught this disgraceful murderer.

I understand that, as the parents wanted to ensure it was the children who were remembered. Whether by choice or due to gag orders, only certain people could be interviewed and only 2 sets of the parents speaking about 2 of the victims. So it all feels a bit disjointed and unfocused as a documentary. You deeply feel for the parents.

It's an indictment on social media and media and the access they have to murder cases in the states. The Dean of the college is grossly out of his depth and mismanaged the support / notifications to the families and witnesses. The police department did a good job, though under skilled with how to manage this kind of media intensity.

If you like the process of the investigation- this is not the documentary for you.

Feels like this was a rush to get it to market, should have waited till post trial for a more well rounded telling.

  • What was the director thinking??

A clear indictment on this disgraceful excuse for policing. Trigger happy cops with no respect for life - judge, jury, executioners.

The series showcases this throughout the series by showing repeat cases where the Bakersfield PD has clearly behaved with gross negligence and then covered for their officers. Perspectives from the victims families are shared, along with reporters who were following these cases at the time.

The disappointing aspect is the direction- they made a creative choice to use paid actors to read testimony and letters and they show these actors on screen who talk to the audience direct. It's so off putting, just read it via voiceover or summarise. It absolutely takes away from the flow. I also don't like the narrators voice or script - it's overwritten.

  • Emotional Ghosting

If you parent a female teenager - beware. The girls are portrayed as dumb, pitted as enemies and it's only the 2 girlfriends who appear with intelligence. The 2 lead males emotionally ghost the female lead and the advice from their mother to the female lead is: she needs to listen to them. The characters as individuals are actually quite likeable, but the script allows for pretty archaic / misogynistic messaging.

The movie is better than the first- which basically portrayed the lead female falling in love with an emotionally unhinged man, with anger issues. The old 'she'll fix him / he'll be different for her' plot line. The movies show strong family units, yet no parenting or guidance is given to the young men to show them how to respect women, and no one is allowed teaching her what she deserves / has a right to respect. For 2020, these movies are already outdated.
