  • Ouch!

The disco era for me lasted from about the mid-point of my time as a university undergraduate to shortly before I began grad studies a few years later. Culturally, I thought it had little to offer me, particularly when, back then, I could hear it on just about every radio station and in every bar and pizza place I went to. The summer following the release of "Saturday Night Fever", I swear I could hear the soundtrack coming from every second or third apartment in the complex where I lived during the late 1970s.

I vaguely remember watching it several years ago, largely out of curiosity, having lived during those times. Earlier today, it was shown on Turner Classic Movies and I was reminded of why I hated it the first time.

There's no plot to speak of. I had no idea of who the characters were aside from a few lines explaining to each other why they decided to go to that particular night spot. After that, the various stories become a confused mess.

The cast, on the whole, wasn't particularly memorable. Only Jeff Goldblum, Debra Winger, and Donna Summer were the only actors that I recognized, even after nearly half a century.

I get the impression that this movie was made to cash in on the disco craze which, by the time it was released, had likely already peaked. It's the kind of movie that one might go to see with one's friends when there's nothing else to do on a Saturday night.

  • Disappointing

When I first heard of this movie, I was expecting something along the lines of "King of the Khyber Rifles" or "Gunga Din". Unfortunately, this movie isn't it.

I found the plot predictable because I'd seen the theme in numerous other films, so it didn't have anything new or interesting for me. I was hoping for action, adventure, and spectacle, but it came up short.

This is the sort of movie to watch when there's nothing else available. It's not bad but it's far from great.

  • "I'm Temujin, the toughest Mongol west of the Pecos, pilgrim, and this here is my range"

OK, the Duke didn't say that line in this movie, but it wouldn't have been out of place if he had. This clunker has been regarded as one of the 50 worst films ever made and it's hard not to see why.

Just about everything in this flick is out of whack. John Wayne stars as the future Genghis Khan with Susan Hayward as a red-haired Tatar princess. Uh, no--that doesn't work. (Actually, they worked together more than a decade earlier in "The Fighting Seabees".)

The dialog is cringe-worthy (e. G., "She is a woman--much woman", "I've taken you as wife, Bortai") and much of the plot doesn't make a lot of sense, either.

Sadly, the score by the great Victor Young is wasted as are the talents of many of the cast members, such as Pedro Armendariz (who was in the earlier "Fort Apache", another JW film) and Agnes Moorehead.

While this is clearly a terrible film, it can be considered to be so bad that it's good. It's worth viewing just to see how inept it is.

Fortunately, this didn't hurt John Wayne's career. He more than redeemed himself a few months later when he starred in what is probably the best western movie ever made: "The Searchers".
