When I saw the trailer back in 2019, I suspected this was a movie that tried to be another Wicker Man (not the Nic Cage version). Upon watching it recently, I realize I was correct.
The movie starts off with some deaths that affect the lead character Dani. None of that made any sense (who duct tapes gas exhaust pipe to their face?), and I realized we would be getting more pointless jump scares and gross out moments like in Hereditary that masked the lack of good dialogue or story telling.
Another thing that hurts this movie is that none of the characters are likeable. They are all selfish, or have some sort of victim complex. It became a chore to watch after a while.
The ritual scenes were quite dull, so I found myself fast forwarding through much of them. Add on to this the slow and deliberate way everyone seems to speak in this movie, with long pauses between replies, and you have a movie running time that is way longer than it needed to be.
It also seemed pretty obvious that the outsiders were purposely brought there for a 'reason', so it was just a matter of waiting until the cast slowly dwindled in numbers.
The ending made no sense, and as I indicated before at the beginning, really just felt like a cheap knock off of The Wicker Man.
If you like gross-out moments that are only there to disguise weak storytelling, then you will enjoy this movie.
