  • Netflix gets it right

American Primeval is an unapologetic look at Brigham Young in the era of 1857- this show is so satisfying. How it's raw and unflinching..

The best part is all races, sex, and stories are portrayed as they should be .. no one is trying to push the "message" here. It's cold. It's real.

Exposition comes at a slow "on a need to know" basis which is how it works best.

And the casting works too... Taylor Kitsch is a loner burning down the scenes he's in

Betty Gilpin is astute and proper but fantastic as a woman with a lot to lose

Same with Shea Whigham, who always plays these understated roles and brings the right amount of agency to all of his characters

Shawnee Pourier is a mute and that's an hard role to take on, but she expresses so much through her acting.

But my new favorite standout is Saura Lightfoot-Leon. I was captivated by her in The Agency and she's just as riveting here.

If Netflix took the time to put more shows like this on their list, instead of filling up their schedules with thoughtless content, they'd be a bigger contender to take on HBO.

  • Warm and fuzzy

I like this movie. It's nice. It's like a tea on a a rainy day. This is like a modern version of The Big Chill- typical family issues solved through dilemmas and hugs and jocularity. It's people sitting around and laughing at the craziness of it all.

I've seen it all before but it works. The reason it works is its casting. Actors who are grounded and real and you can feel true empathy from them. Actors who always have emotion or depth no matter what the role.

This isn't going to go deep on a psych level or rip apart what the foundations of marriage might be but it does offer a couple nice lemon twists you don't see coming. Overall its a good watch and feels like an afternoon spent with friends.
