Amazingly good prequel to The Omen. Nell Tiger Free is a powerhouse talent and her portrayal of the nun is perfect. The scene of her possession after the car crash is on par with Isabel Adjani's scene in the subway in Possession. Very original in its plot, relying on the second film only at the end.
Everyone wants to watch a documentary on Sir Conan Doyle and the occult. It's intrinsically interesting. Unfortunately, Philip Gardiner has done a disservice to that subject. The timing and rhythm of the images and the narration are unbearable to experience.
The information is useful, but it comes in such a plodding and monotonous manner that waiting for the nuggets that Gardener offers up are simply not worth the time. There's too little time in life to spend waiting for Gardiner to hurry up.
One would better spend the time teading Christine Ferguson's scholarly edition of Conan Doyle's novel The Land of Mist.

This is not as bad as people want you to think. Great plot. Good film for nerdy couples to cuddle to.
Most effective for me is the atmosphere the director Mann creates. He's always been good at digging deep into the criminal mind, like he actually uses real life informants.
This is not the best Michael Mann movie, but it's worth watching.
