  • Movies that have aged well

I only knew the Scary Movie version. Who would have thought I'd see a horror film from 1973?

In the original, the possessed girl (Regan) gets straight to the point, where a little "game" with the Ouija board has the worst possible consequences, falling victim to a demon who take control of her body, possessing her. Her desperate mother searches for a solution.

I'm sure there are people who can name the specific genre and storytelling style, and so on. I only can express my experience:

There are no jump scares. The focus is on creating terror through makeup, special effects and staging. The ending was abrupt, but hey, we're used to other things.

Are there contexts? Or... direction? Setting? From the time period that don't quite add up. Of course, we're talking about something from 40 years ago.

More than anything, I liked getting to know other styles of horror movies for a change. I wouldn't watch it again, but it still has an entertaining plot for horror fans.

  • I expected less; I was surprised.

When my boyfriend told me about the story of Flamminghot, I was expecting a serious documentary... not a dramatization of the progress and tenacity of a small-time worker who didn't give up (who I later learned was hardly anything like that in real life; to begin with, he wasn't even poor or a street sweeper).

Richard and Judy's relationship is inspiring to watch. The phrase "behind every great man, there's a great woman" is very true. There's no shortage of support, faith, and understanding.

Life takes many turns, and anyone could have been in Richard's position, but not everyone can imitate his brilliance and originality. Opportunities exist, but success is a combination of effort and coincidence. The shine to never give up has its "I don't know what" when we see people getting ahead (it reminds me that if someone else could do it, I can too).

You know the phrase that says "persist, persist, persist. The universe falls in love with a stupefied heart." I was moved with all my heart and I also encouraged him not to give up.

If Richard could do it, we all can: Humility, persistence, support, and originality.

  • I liked it, but I expected more Minnie and Celia

Life for African-American women in the 1960s, in well-off white families, isn't easy. If you don't believe it, let Aibileen and Minny tell us about it.

A very good movie to watch, which has its own unique appeal: inspiring, moving, and entertaining.

I came to the movie because of the scenes between Minnie and Miss Celia (and yes, the final scene where her husband appears all understanding and loving), so I'm disappointed that the fried chicken scene and poor Celia having another "situation" are the only ones between them.

On the other hand, Aibileen had a hard time. Hard, hard. Seeing what they have to go through and how they "train" their daughters to follow the same path has its own implicit cruelty. In 2025, it's hard to believe something so drastic ever existed, but hey, many types of cruelty still exist today.

Needless to say, I liked it and I recommend it.
