At first, I really liked how it was moving along. However, like another reviewer, not quite getting why every period drama out of the BBC HAS to include at least one token LGBTQI, BAME, and Feminist? I can't recall how many times I had to fast forward over the two males naked from the waist up or kissing scenes while trying to watch it with my pre-teen. It was over down and not needed. A little to the imagination was left for the heterosexuals. which would have matched the gay couple. Downtown Abby was great in how the approached one of their characters being gay and having just enough without constantly throwing it in the viewer's face. A lot of the writing included dialogue that was not thought out well or had too many plots/details that were not believable. The stars of the show were Sean Bean and Blake Harrison. Also, the story line with the Rossler's was very good.
It's not a storyline taken straight from Jane Austen's book, obviously. This is why this is a period drama worthy to be watched. It has the dynamics of a typical Jane Austen adaptation with a hint of non-Jane scenes sprinkled in. Some bemoan the use of partial nudity in one scene, a bit of the body of the male lead in another scene, but it really does not detract from the movie. Whereas I would have liked to have had the scenes of the 'taken in her hand' and the fully clothed sex scene not so obvious so my preteen could have watched it with me changed, I still enjoyed the overall story line and how the missing parts to Jane Austen's story were filled in. It had some twists and turns and I really loved the dynamics with the great actors that portrayed Esther and Lord Babington. Those two actors were by far my favorite. Esther's character was brilliant with heartfelt real emotion while Lord Babington was an ideal man to pine for in an epic Jane Austen novel even when he was not the leading man. So many of the different cast members really rounded out the story from Theo James to Jack Fox to Anne Reid to Turlough Convery and Kris Marshall. I really hope to see a season two as there is so much more to provide to complete the story.
I don't normally gravitate towards this movie genre but I've been a huge fan of Casey Affleck for years. I really enjoyed the characters, the actors and the storyline. Whereas it really picked up with the action scenes, the one on one conversations between he and Rag, provided the love one needed to see emitting from this desperate dad trying to shield and protect his daughter. It was written in a manner that would allow you to relate with innate love for another and what steps one would take in securing their safety. I was even more impressed with Affleck's performance after realizing he also wrote and directed it. A must see to witness Affleck's depth as an actor.
