Totally enjoyed the first season and was looking forward to seeing more. I watched half of the second season until I realised I was watching a turgid overdramatised soap opera. So so poor. Lots of episodic plots that boil down to nothing just keeping all the characters stomping around looking anxty. Tries to tie into the zeitgeist without saying anything of interest. Boring stuff. Such a shame as I like a lot of the actors including John Hamm and Jennifer Aniston. Although Stephen Fry was diabolically terrible in his role it felt like lazy casting and his acting was so poor and unconvincing.
I have not read the book this is based on so I went in with no expectations. It reminded me a lot of Studio Ghibli films in terms of the animation and the central character's adventure and some of the ecological themes. At times I found Michael to be frustrating as he made one wrong choice after another. But this was balanced out as the film progressed and by the end I really connected with the characters and cared about what was going on. A beautiful, wholesome film with a very emotional conclusion. Well done!
I rewatched this last night. I can't recall when I saw it last - maybe when it was first released? And then I've maybe seen bits when it's been on TV. This is the first time I've sat down and watched the whole thing again - my verdict: A Classic!
I laughed, I cried and I jumped up and down with tension as Doc tried desperately to connect that damned cable to the town hall clock! What a brilliant ride this film is. What I noticed was how neat the storyline is - it's what makes it so satisfying. Every piece slots together to make it fun, enjoyable and satisfying right to the end. A perfect slice of cinema from 1985. A gem! 💎
