I feel like I'm being kind giving this a 6. The concept for the show is good. It has that 'why didn't I think of this' vibe since it's based off a thing we all did as kids whenever we where home without parents.
However, this host 'Rutledge Wood' could SERIOUSLY tone back on the obvious puns and observations! Yelling everything that is happening as we see it! He has that 'annoying children's show' host syndrome where I feel like I'm losing brain cells just listening to this guy! From as predictable as lines like "And the doctor is in!" to really bad puns where a guy jumps onto platform that looks like cheese and Rutledge comes in with "Looks like John is the Big Cheese now!" 0.0
The only thing he's missing is a Krusty the Clown laugh at the end of every sentence. 'HuhuHEHAA'
I'd be willing forgive it some what if this was a live show and he had to come up with stuff on the spot but no! This is all edited after the fact with his ADR voice over! Meaning, this is the best he was willing to come up with! It doesn't get any better the more you watch.
Good concept in the same realm of reality shows like Wipeout or American Ninja Warrior but man do they need to get the host under control.
We got such a cool concept here! Martial arts mixed with an slave system and a larger world of mysticism with some cool villains!
What could possibly go wrong?!
Well not too much but if your the kind of person who finds it hard to believe that this is dystopic future has no guns, then this my not be the show for you. That and your tolerance for bloody violence will be tested as well.
But if you can get past all that then what you have here is an entertaining show that still has inconsistencies in character work and world building. Potential that is wasted when the writers don't fully commit to making us understand these characters and this world. At times it can feel muddled. The same way it aspects of The Walking Dead feel muddled when there isn't much plot development happening.
Thankfully Into the Badlands does have more story to tell in it's shorter 6 episode first season with plenty of well choreographed fight scenes and twist in the plot that prevent you from being completely bored of the show it self.
I'll still give the second season a chance. It's on Netflix so that makes things convenient. Hopefully I'll get to learn more about whatever larger system is at work in the center of this story and the next coming episodes will continue to make the journey for these characters worth while.
But of course we can't forget about the fighting in this show! And what a bloody good time it is!

Given the 40 years of a legacy that Star Wars has, it is unfortunate that general filmgoer audinces have a limited criteria on what is alowed to actually happen in a Star Wars movie. (That only contributes to half the pressure of being the director of one of these things.)
If Star Wars could also be "a made for TV crime thriller" like that of Breaking Bad then sure! We could be open to such twists and turns.
But for a Big Blockbuster Space Opera that has growing story over mutiple movies... This a strait up middle finger to those expectations...!
