  • Not a Breakout Show

I'm not a fan of Daniel Tosh; don't consider him very funny, but the writeup of Brickleberry sounded interesting so I gave it a shot. The first season I found to be fairly decent; I laughed at least once an episode or thereabouts. The second season, not so much.

Season two is where I became suspicious of the real premise behind Brickleberry. The whole pitch seems to have been a one-up to Family Guy in terms of political incorrectness and, dare I say, "edginess". Well, it succeed in that regard, but that doesn't make it original or clever. At the end of the day it felt dated and derivative.

It also came as no surprise to me that the most annoying and unlikeable character just so happened to be the one voiced by Tosh. I did however like the remaining characters to varying degrees. Despite being a massive stereotype, like everything else in this show, Connie was the most honest and endearing character who actually cared about her colleagues and has a near-fully fleshed out backstory.

Finally, I wasn't a fan of the lack of continuity in the show. A strange thing to say about an adult, animated series, but even Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy has some level of continuity, not Brickleberry. Whatever happens in one episode, no matter how shocking or devastating, things will be reset to the status quo in the next ep, meaning nothing really matters.

I don't regret watching this show; like I said it accomplished making me laugh on occasion, but it's very clear why it only got three seasons. I'm not even sure I'll watch season three, so I'll just say if you're looking for a break from the average animated comedy maybe Brickleberry will fill that void... or maybe it won't. Cheers.

  • That's No Way to Get a Head in Life

About halfway through this episode I realized why I liked the previous one so much; because Maximus wasn't in it. Not that he's a bad character, it's just difficult to feel bad for him when he is the cause of all his own problems. Every time something happens he either lies or doesn't say anything at all. If he simply used his words his life might be considerably better and he wouldn't be a pariah with his own people. Idiots don't get redemption arcs in fiction.

Also, why would you design a suit of armor that can be deactivated from the outside, quickly and easily? That's happened twice now and is more than a little silly.

Having said all that, the mystery behind vaults 31 & 32 was the highlight of this episode, despite them forgetting about 33 running out of water. I know nothing of the game but I'm looking forward to more of this show. Cheers.
