As the youngest boomer, I somehow missed this one growing up even though the title was familiar. It holds up reasonably well even if the characters are a little stereotypical and silly. Haley Mills carries the movie in the portions that the cat can't. A couple scenes apear to either use a puppet (nearly unnoticable) or a moderately sedated cat, but otherwise I can only imagine how many treats and catnip were used to film the scenes with the cat.
Part of the fun for me was seeing small roles and cameos filled by recognizable character actors from back in the day.
The movie takes awhile to set up and get going, but pays off in the end. Some minor editing, mostly shaving a second here or there for pacing, would improve it a bit, especially in the first half. But overall this was a refreshing and enjoyable watch.

Despite a few minor things that don't make sense (Wasn't the air supposed to be poisoned? "Police drones don't have infrared cameras?, etc.) and the slow pace, if you can handle a low budget, teen friendly, post apocalyptic story, this is very watchable and often quietly enjoyable.
It reminds me of short stories and novellas in science fiction magazines from the 60s through the 80s. It is cerebral rather than action based, mildly cautionary without being overtly preachy. If you want guns and explosions this is not for you. Yes there are some background plot problems and unanswered questions, but such is life.

Now I have to find the stores this was based on.
A little dreary. A little vague. More than a little dated. More than a little slow (by desogn.) Very low budget with typical "made for TV" 70s low production values... (Suprised Coppola actually put his name on it.) But somehow a decent watch despite all that!
The streaming platform blurb spoils it a bit but I won't here. The mystery is intriguing, even more since so little of the back story is fleshed out even once the truth is told. It reminded me of some 60s SF stores I read as a kid, mostly in a pleasant way. I am going to search for the stories this is based on, with high hopes that the movie didn't do do them justice.
The acting, mostly wooden by design is passable. Shatner is mostly wasted but did get in at least one of his silly dramatic pauses near the end.
