What is it with people wanting to try and remake one of the definitive sci-fi novels of all time? The George Pal 1950 version, Jeff Wayne's musical and maybe Independence Day all were reasonable interpretations. I even enjoyed the Tom Cruise one.
But then you get stuff like the tenuously associated TV Series with Gabriel Byrne and the downright bloody awful BBC offering of a few years ago.
And then, beneath all these, there's this!
It's like someone has seen Cloverfield and gone "Hey! Let's do exactly the same - but worse!" The main character played by Mr Cube is the most unsympathetic I've ever seen on a film. He's basically a stalker and control freak who, in real life would have been subject to numerous restraining orders taken out by his own kids against him even contacting them.
Mind you, they don't help themselves in the way that every call is answered with video on and they always seem to be able to keep the phone pointed towards their faces - even when trying to escape from giant Martian machines.
The most terrifying thing in this film isn't the aliens. It's the possibility that this level of surveillance might be actually available to the government!
On the other hand, I feel it's more likely to be a work of fantasy in the same way that in films, a computer whiz seems to be able to create a fully rendered 3D animation with a few key strokes and a bit of typing. Can't even tell you if it improves part way through as I fell asleep.
In short - cheap, nasty, credulous and completely unnecessary. Avoid.

There are so many films involving alien artifacts or beings landing on earth:
All of them are probably better than this. And all of them were ripped off by it. There's really nothing original in this movie. Every event you've probably seen before - either in a sci-fi flick like The Thing or a horror movie like Poltergeist.
However, those movies were cleverly constructed with unpredictable twists & turns and storylines which eventually offered some explanation for the events in them.
No such luck here. If you are seeking a story with sound and credible causes behind the events being shown, then I suggest you avoid this movie.
However if you like your films generally vacuous with lots of spectacle, gore and flashing lights, then this movie is for you!
