Lexi's play had been teased since the very start of the season and had been building up to be a massive event. Going into the episode, I had high expectations and boy did Sam Levinson knock it out the park again.
The episode is essentially a much much better and more nuanced version of the little Episode 3 fourth-wall break bit at the start. It cuts back and forth between actual happenings and dramatic realizations of them in Lexi's play to effortlessly contrast the story.
Some plotlines gets intricately woven in and the narrative as a whole progresses forward despite the play being the sole focus of this episode. Sam managed to balance some light-hearted humor with dark and serious moments perfectly. The cinematography and music were amazing as always.
No spoilers but all I will say is that ending on *that* musical number was one of the best things this show has done. From the buildup till the payoff, I was hooked. While I don't think this is the best episode we've had so far, it certainly was a satisfying penultimate. Can't wait for the finale!
