This movie's aesthetics are great (beautiful and compelling). If put in a different movie, those few memorable scenes could have made a great movie. But in the end, when you see this movie, you get one cliche after the other. VERY amateurish script; very redundant. They show close ups of very obvious things as if one was a 5 year old. And, judging by the reviews, I guess most are. The bottom line is, the script is amateurish, and the actors did what they could with what was given to them. Some scenes are beautiful, thanks to the cinematographer. The only substance this movie has is in the title...
It's the only episode worth watching and the only where you can see and feel Poe's legacy. Most of the characters (except for Lenore, Timberland's husband and Roderick's wives are extremely annoying (especially the older version of Madeline)). I normally enjoy Mike Flanagan's work. But in this case...I don't know if it had to do with the strike or his lack of inspiration stems from boredom doing the same (it happens to some artists it seems). I get that the Ushers are corrupt, unlikable people. But you have to like something about a character to want to keep watching. You have to root for them. Not in this show. You don't root for anyone or care if they live or die. Huge disappointment.
No, it is not the best thriller I have seen. It is not a Hitchcock film or one of Scorsese's or De Palma's thrillers from back in the 80's. But it's not a terrible movie either. I felt the need to review this title because it is unfair that this film has such low rating; and mainly because of someone who clearly did not comprehend the movie. The killer did not mistakenly kill one of his/her victims. He/she did it for a reason which is very clear if you have a brain. I will not say more cause I do not want to spoil it for anyone (which is also why I am not being specific about gender).
So if you are bored and have nothing better to do, I'd say go ahead and watch this movie (especially if you enjoy whodunits). The acting is decent and so are the technical aspects of the movie. Again, it's not a work of art by any means, but it will entertain you, which is all I was expecting, so no complains here!
