I started watching After Life tentatively, as someone who wasn't a huge fan of the Office and Extras, I assumed after life would be another Gervais 'hurts-to-watch'. But instead, After Life was a surprisingly poignant watch. I was hooked by episode two, and ended up binging the rest of the series in the same night.
Some reviews have critisized the writing of the series, although for me, the superb acting and tangible chemistry covered any writing flaws easily. I found myself genuinely crying at certain moments in the show, this served to make the comedy even funnier. Every single character felt fully fleshed out and as if they really were just going about their daily life. One thing I felt let the series down slightly, was the direction. There seemed to be a lot of unnessesary crane shots and steadycam sequences that looked like stock footage (namely the dog walking scenes). Bar this minor distraction, the phenomenal acting, powerful story and hugely diverse and meaningful roster of characters makes After Life an instant must-watch
