  • Modern take that's missing something

In an attempt to freshen up the story and make it 'modern' the writers have taken a very lay back relaxed and almost silly view of the story.

It is into the story in the first few minutes and starts halfway through a storyline, but viewers are expected to fill in the blanks with their existing knowledge of Superman.

The character of Superman is presented with flaws and weaknesses, super heroes abound for good & evil all over the place, monsters come & go on a weekly basis, so a little Godzilla vibe mixed in with the classic Superman take.

Lex Luthor has massive power, basically already ruling the world, in 99% of the film far more than Superman, again mixing up the story, I tended to wonder why Luther is so fixated on Superman, he seems to be able to do whatever he wants whenever he wants, why stop and destroy himself via Superman ?

It's a brave attempt but it doesn't quite come off, the main characters are light & unlikeable, the plot jumpy.

Above all Lois Lane is exceptionally unlikeable and super annoying, Superman would just fly away and forget earth in reality, earth is a mess.

  • Okay, but lacks bite.

The cast is good, the production values are okay, at times a bit 'cheap', the story and mystery gently unfolds with the old people's home as the backdrop.

I stalled 3 times initially through boredom then pushed through to watch the complete movie, it starts slowly and slowly builds to a luke warm climax.

So in the end it is a nice movie but it lacks bite and traction because it's just too gentle, even sad.

It has a sweetness which is heartwarming but in modern times probably will struggle to connect with modern audiences.

  • Okay but missing realism's

The cast is good, the idea of the two female leaders is good, the kidnapping is a good idea, but it fails to be suspenseful because of the occasional really stupid obvious 'could never happen' moments.

Most annoying award goes to the daughter who whines and cries through each episode until you wish she had been kidnapped.

The daughter and quite a few others just seem to have total access to high level government and military meetings, just stupid.

In reality government agencies would be all over a kidnapping in minutes, in this, they take days.

The Prime Minister strolls around Number 10, from room to room, randomly chatting to involved parties, totally ridiculous.

The Prime Minister gets her secretary, yes her secretary, to run security checks and situation reports, again weirdly farcical.

Kidnappers fly in & out of the UK with no security checks or border control.

So while it's okay the reality holes are huge, pulling the enjoyment factor down.
