I was honestly so pleasant surprised with this movie. As a movie critic who doesn't have any history in the universe, they don't really like it because they don't understand the story. If you have any history with Pokemon, and especially if you have seen the first movie, everything makes perfect sense and is SO much fun!
I truly do think this movie breaks the video game movie curse, I really did enjoy it, but its probably not a movie for anyone who doesn't like Pokémon before they see it! (Which makes me understand why critics are rating it so low....its probably not objectively a good movie if you don't have a history with the franchise). Visual effects better get an Oscar!
Alright, I'll say it, we are oversaturated with bad and tired animation nowadays. However, Spiderman breaks the mold in every way, being one of the most beautiful and innovative pieces of animation that has ever been created. It is in the top 5 pieces of animation ever created in my opinion. It's relatable, and shows us that it doesn't matter what we look like or where we come from, anyone can wear the mask. Not to mention, it is the ONLY comic book movie that has been created to date in my opinion. The dotted and comicbook-driven aesthetic is unbelievable, and captures your attention every moment of the film. An absolutely wonderful movie that has deserved every award it has already won, and every award it is up for in the future.
A wonderful exploration of going through the most awkward years of your life in the 2000s. It's SO nostalgic as anyone who grew up in that era experienced these exact things! AIM episode on point.
Now, to address the big issue people have, the fact that 30-year-olds are playing 13 year-olds. Get over it. Have you watched Wet Hot American Summer on Netflix? It's the same deal. And yes, I get that it can be weird to think of them pretending to have these relationships with these teenagers, BUT hear me out. 1, they have body doubles for anything necessary because obviously. 2, would you feel MORE comfortable watching an ACTUAL 13-year-old girl discovering masturbation or shaking her bare ass sexually in a thong in the mirror? HELL NO. You would be disgusted. It's far more inappropriate than their approach. So take a seat, and enjoy the nostalgia of awkward teen years, especially if you went to middle school in the early 2000s. It's a hilarious and wonderful period piece.
