This movie did an incredible job of being both lighthearted but also meaningful. "Stockholm" is a fast-paced, exhilarating film with a sarcastic bite. This movie comically illustrates the psychology behind Stockholm syndrome, a psychosomatic condition that occurs when a hostage develops a bond with their capture as a means of survival. Based on a true story, "Stockholm" follows an ex-con as he robs a bank, taking 3 people hostage in an attempt to free his old partner in crime. This is the first film in a long time that made me both laugh and feel emotionally invested. While the plot sounds simple, it was unlike any crime drama I've ever watched. Check it out if you'd enjoy an original thriller.
A horror film that manages to be both scary and also meaningful at the same time! Soul to keep featured an amazing cast that was able to authentically illustrate the inclusive nature of today's society. I enjoyed this movie so much that I was listening to an interview by Shady Tree Films thru SoundCloud where the director, David Allensworth, described the movie as "bringing something you haven't seen before", and I couldn't agree more. He described exactly how I felt when he said how "usually with deaf characters, the story revolves around her being deaf, but in this, there was an amazing cast one of whom happens to be deaf". All around great film with a ton of layers, way past being only a "scary" movie. Really recommend!
I always enjoy films with strong female leads, so Michelle Monaghan's incredible performance as Judith Woods ensured that I'd love this movie. SAINT JUDY is an inspiring story about a single mother and female lawyer in the early 2000's fighting to change the law regarding immigrants who seek asylum within the U.S. Throughout the movie, Monahan conveys Judy's resilient personality, illustrating both her personal struggle to be caring, single mom and her professional fight to be a successful female attorney. The fact that this is based on a true story made it all the more empowering. Overall, topics such as immigration and women's rights are major players, but the whole cast, including Monaghan, did an incredible job of depicting these rights in ways different than what one would typically expect from today's media. For those who appreciate strong females in a film will love SAINT JUDY.
