Bring Her Back

Bring Her Back

  • Worth bringing back.

Danny and Michael Philippou's previous film'Talk to Me' was a watchable and well written horror that had more tricks up its sleeve than most generic horrors thanks largely to a sharpy written script.

Here they capture the scuzzy, dirty suburban feel of the Australian backwoods that add to a menacing atmosphere of grief, loss of innocence, dark malevolent dealings.

It will divide most. The violence is , at times, almost unwatchable (the knife scene in the kitchen made me wince and look away), the plot and motivation unclear.

Those willing to go the extra mile will see solid acting, esp Sally Hawkins (sadly reminding me of Leslie Brown and Zoe Powell like Amy Madigan was in Weapons). Female performers in horror are strong this year.

The effects are gory and nasty and it doesn't go the way one would expect in horrors.

This drab, dirty horror has no happy ending.

  • Watchable but cliched.

  • A 'weapon' worth purchasing.

This mash up of M. R James and The Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of the years best films.

The Rashomon style structure works effectively as it shows important people (however non salubrious)within a small town community rocked by the disappearance of 17 schoolchildren.

The mystery dissolves into horror effectively, the sense of small town vilified of the school teacher is nasty and ugly and all too real.

I was dazzled by the beautiful neighbourhood houses and photography reminiscent of the other great horror It Follows and its great to see Amy Madigan again in a loopy and pivotal role.

It proudly displays its influences Rosemary's Baby, The Witches to The Night of the Demon.

Great use of Beware of Darkness from George Harrison cements this horror as a modern classic.
