I had no idea this one existed. In fact i've only discovered this title through a pirate dvd someone gave me with a pile of other movies.
I generally cringe at this type of production, and although I collect "bad" B-Movies , i tend to skip the ones with that "Asylum" production vibe, as they tend to drag, be totally imaginative and boring.
Something that this one isnt.
To start there was one thing that i loved. Its clear the production had no budget, but it still managed to create a great epic vibe in the sense that from the start it feels like this adventure is really set in a vast open world.
The concept is like something out of Waterworkd but mixed with Tomb Raider and this film really manages to convey the idea of the entire world being semi-underwater due to the rise of the oceans after the polar caps melt.
The adventure is pretty Tomb Raider generic but filled with little good ideas scattered through out the film in a diverse way that always keep the adventure fresh as it moves forward.
And for rhe lack of budget its actually reallly well developed.
The sets work, the CGI although weak is enough to convey the sense of scale the movie needs to set up the locations and the adventure has a fun carefree vibe.
The film does not take itself too serious but the overall tone is good enough to create good "dramatic" moments when they are needed.
Brolin still has charisma and its too bad the film starts to center around one of his sons characters, which is your typical jock moron with nothing much for the audience to root for.
But it does not ruin the movie.
Overall dont expect an Hollywood blockbuster but if you love B movies, I totally recommend this one. Its got a cool adventure story and sometimes it feels like a James Rollin novel.
This has actually a more complex story than many so called amazing Marvel Hollywood mega productions.
So if you are looking for a fun B movie with archaelogical Tomb Raider / Indiana Jones themes , and you understand the B movie slurit and limitations, you will have fun with this one.
Generic, yes, but with good ideas, a good pace and above all its a fun low budget ride.
Recommended.

This is the worst TV Series I´ve tried to watch since Rings of Power.
In fact, this is the Rings of Power of sci-fi TV...and even worse than Wheel of Time if that is even possible.
The whole thing looks so cheap; all the production values don't seem to come together. The CGI is reminiscent of those "Photoshop" cinema days, and the writing is the worst part.
This series appears to have been written by a millennial fed on a diet of low-IQ superhero American comics, as it seems to have been penned by a teenager who imagined the Alien universe as some sort of simplistic comic book.
The Alien now even fights as if he´s some type of Marvel comics super villain. And don´t get me started on the "military" in this series...which tries AND FAILS to capture the Aliens military crew vibe from the second movie in such a cringe way that it´s almost a joke.
It´s really hard to describe, but the writing is cringeworthy, the situations are poorly done, the characters are absolutely terrible, and the whole connection to the original mood does not work because even the sets feel like a Temu discount set.
The cinematography floats between mysty (blurry), moody, and sharp TV flat look, and the whole thing is BORING!
I wasn't expecting this to be awesome, but I certainly didn't expect an alien series to be boring!
Super predictable, childish, and filled with forced "inclusivity" in a Disney+ style, the whole world feels like a discount Temu version of the original Alien world.
The game ALIEN ISOLATION from ten years ago still remains the best Alien Sequel/Prequel for this franchise. That was awesome and scary. Not this series. What was I expecting from an Alien series which is PG-13?! Insane.
ALIEN EARTH is just unbelievable. Incredibly boring and with zero suspense. Terrible series. I´ve tried to go beyond episode five, but there´s simply no way I can watch the whole eight episodes of this absolute failure.
- I was expecting Willow to be a terrible series, but it ended up being one of the best classic fantasy adventures I've ever come across, making it a brilliant sequel to the original Willow movie.
Not ALIEN EARTH. As a tie-in to the Alien franchise, this series fails on everything. And the rock/pop/grunge "cool" soundtrack is absolutely awful, too. Songs pop up at the most unexpected places in the narrative, and it´s just stupid.
Apparently, this is now a Disney+ thing... add contemporary pop/rock songs to their fantasy worlds... Willow did that, and I hated those bits, but compared to the "cool" rock vibe Alien Earth tries to convey for "the kids", Willow did it masterfully.
If the ALIEN EARTH series gets a second season after this, when Disney cancelled the Willow series, I´m done with Disney. As if I wasn´t by now... In short, one of the worst sci-fi TV series I have ever come across. It had the right to be everything except boring.

This is not a movie for dumbed down kids.
If you fed your kid on a diet of modern Hollywood movies marvel style ; filled with a hundred frames per second action scenes to a point your child cant focus on a classic film narrative , before video game editing ruined a couple of generations of movie goers, then its no wonder some people here claimed their children were bored to death because they thought nothing happened in this movie.
This movie was actually more for adults than for children. This movie is for adults that were kids back in the day when they still could relate to other kids in films like The Goonies, Explorers, Flight of the Navigator and in particularly Stand by Me.
Crater is like a cross between Goonies and Stand by Me and the only film that got that retro classic vibe 100% right. Yes, way better than Stranger Things which always felt like a cheap clone of the 1980s style.
Crater is genuine. Its a fascinating scifi film with kids so ignore the usual science nerds who complain about every science detail not being academic.
The whole social and political background has enough depth to keep adults interested, the whole thing feels like a modern Robert Heinlein story like some Pokadyne of Mars prequel or something and the whole kids adventure works on its own too.
The characters are great, the kids are fantastic, the themes are more thought provoking than this movie needed to be and overall the whole film is incredible.
Its not a blockbuster but the concept design is fabulous, the sets are spot on, and the world building is one of the best I've seen in modern sci-fi. But above all Crater works because the kids feel like real people and the movie does a great job in treating the characters in a smart way while retaining that child innocence so well captured back in the 1980s in films like Stand by Me.
If you love Stand by Me and you like sci-fi you need to watch this movie. Someone must have done something wrong in modern Disney because this company actually managed to create one of the best products they did in almost two, decades.
I will buy this on bluray if it ever comes out.
Crater was a really good surprise and one of the best kids movies for grown ups in decades.
I still cant believe this was made by modern Disney because its actually a great movie.
Ignore the bad reviews. Just watch it.
