Layer Cake is only about one topic - moving drugs and is in no way layered as in the literary sense of the term layered. The complicated picture of the London drug scene is comprised of many layers which combine in unexpected ways. The protagonist wants to retire from the drug dealing business before turning thirty. His thoughts are quickly dashed after he is cajoled into looking for the daughter of one of his business associates. This seemingly simple task quickly turns into a large and murky task that has the protagonist questioning why he took the job on in the first place.
Truffaut is the hard boiled French Noir. Not a scene wasted but still rich in simile and metaphor. A plot as preposterous as Conan Doyle would tell or maybe an opera, but still we take it hook, line, and sinker. Oh , and that Truffaut twist we know is coming but never see. And as dark as anything, François never leaves you with anything but futility.
The beginning is interesting but the ending is slow and tedious. Sometimes there is too much information, and the scenes seem to drag on. I really lost my interest about half way through , but kept watching. By 1926 mobsters have a cruel streak and don't think anything of taking another person's life. Joe is anachronism in that he cares for his friends and those around him.
After spending time at the Charlestown Prison and being there when Sacco and Vanzetti are executed, he makes his way to Tampa. His goal is to destroy a man who robbed him of his first love.
