This is a story of the great American adventure; a keel boat trip up the Missouri River in 1832. No phones, no wonder drugs, no interstate highways, no TV, not even toilet paper or flush toilets; this movie is about a time when men were men, and they had to be tough to survive--or they were dead. Made during a time when sex and foul language wasn't used to sell movies, action, and the camaraderie among the men--sells this movie. A great cast makes the story come alive; Kirk Douglas is great as Jim Deakins, Arthur Hunnicutt cements his place as one of America's great character actors with his role as Uncle Zeb, and what can you say about Elizabeth Threatt--a beautiful gal with eyes that could melt an iceberg. I wish this movie was five hours long--I didn't want it to end. If you've got two hours and nothing to do, check this movie out--you won't be dissapointed.
Tom Clancy's tour-de-force turned into a great movie, with a great cast. Sean Connery IS Marko Ramius--he steals every scene he's in. Alec Baldwin is solid as Jack Ryan. And the supporting cast led by James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, Fred Dalton Thompson, and the late Richard Jordan is supurb. This is a suspensful thriller from the word go. The action is almost non-stop. The combat footage--both above and below the water are excellent. Hitchcock would have loved this one!
If you love baseball you'll love this film. Costner, Liotta, Madigan and James Earl Jones (one my favorite actors) give stand up performances, and Burt Lancaster shines as Moonlight Graham. But as great a baseball movie as it is, Field of Dreams isn't just about baseball, it's about life, family, reconciliation, and having a catch with Dad. Field of Dreams brings some of baseball's greatest heros back to life, I only wish they had brought back my hero...Roberto Clemente. And if you don't cry at the end of the movie when Ray asks his Dad to have a catch there is something wrong with you.
