If you like James Robinson Justice bellowing at all and sundry for 2 hours you will love this. A film that has about 2 jokes. One is the bullying Justice, two is the incompetence of the drunken randy crew being bawled out by Justice. In amongst this is a chaste romance between Dirk Bogarde and pre blond Brigitte Bardot ,who speaks English ,like I speak French. The film has no pace or lightness of touch and I imagine it sticks to the book. Neither has it got the zaniness of a Carry On but it has an interesting cast. They cant help it either!
This comedy is rather hard work. Some theatrical jokes around Dickie Attenborough and you may be surprised to know that Agatha Christie's husband ,the archeologist Max Mallowan was in fact an African! Well he was an Egyptologist. The police are all fools or drunks and apart from Ronan who is the only sensible one. She's a woman you see and drives a Morris minor even though I doubt this model was around in 1953. Shoe horned references to John and Agatha Christie dont help. It was probably no better than the play but I think I would rather sit through that.
