  • Misunderstood gem

I was unsure of this one mainly because the reviews didn't seem all that promising but after viewing it had stuck with me longer than some of the big names being thrown around in the horror genre lately.

I really enjoyed the stylistic choices of the movie and the story played out in a good timely fashion. Marlon Wayans truly stepped up to the plate and put on a clinic from start to finish, I was very impressed with Tyriq Withers albeit not being familiar with his work, he really nailed the unflinching, resilient type.

I think a lot of viewers were put off the fact it is more or less a sports movie but I found it was so much more than that, football was the focus initially but it slowly fades into the backdrop of the movie and the desire to be the best really was the focus (and what you would give to achieve greatness).

It has replay value and the overall presentation is really clean and well polished. The sound tracking was great and it didn't lean too heavily on traditional horror tropes to bring terror to the screen.

  • Way more fun than I expected it to be!

Wow, this move totally surprised me! I semi wrote it off during the opening scenes expecting some sort of tacky revenge tale and I wasn't completely wrong but man did it score high on originality, humour and style.

I typically have low expectations for any Netflix made movie especially recent years stuff but this may be one of the better movies of 2024. I watched it based off a recommendation online and I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did but this movie made me genuinely cackle a few times!

I wasn't too familiar with the cast but they really played their roles well, some of the characters were a little on the nose for my liking but I feel like that was intentional and the pay off to this is a very dynamic cast with the "true" personalities really shining through in the second half of the movie.

I didn't expect this to be as enjoyable as it was, I wish there was a little more thought put into the ending of the film and some of the foreshadowing sequences were heavy handed but the way they edited a lot of it in sequence with the dialogue was well done. A lot of style, flair and great editing techniques, it felt like a truly unique movie start to finish.

I would definitely give this another spin.

  • Burns And Twists

A lot of people seem to struggle with understanding this movie and I'm certain they either didn't put their phone down or stopped before the final act. It's a slow burner for sure but it delivers a good story wrapped in a neat, digestible bow.

It managed to be stylish, entertaining and despite the occult themes throughout the film it stays firmly grounded in reality. The characters are well written and acted perfectly. The tension begins early on and just climbs throughout the picture and right when you think it's done, it throws you through one last ringer.

A lot of the negative reviews seem to be from users lacking basic comprehension in my opinion, it doesn't go too wide in terms of storytelling and it's guilty of spoon feeding some exposition towards the end however the end result is a great little occult horror movie.

I throughly enjoyed it and have returned to it a few times since the first viewing and it does a great job at remaining fresh. I'd recommend it to anybody who has grown bored of the jump scare gore fest horror that plagues the attention deficient masses.
