  • A decent movie in spite of several bad decisions

Not a bad movie but I'm not sure who it will appeal to. The pace is a bit slow for a slasher, and there are some missteps that prevent it from being effective as a psychological thriller. These missteps include the inclusion of narration and some edits that give too much of the plot away. Additionally, the character of the slimy preacher brother-in-law is wasted before the dynamic between him and Grace can pay off. But if I had to pick anything that undermines this movie, more than anything else, it's the narration, which commits the sin of telling you everything rather than letting you figure it out, right down to the symbolism of the white horse at the end of the movie. Just taking the narration out would improve this movie immensely.

  • Missed opportunity

There's something redeemable here that, in more capable hands, would have been special. The leads were all very good, but the movie's tone is uneven. As a slasher, it fails to stand out. We've seen these characters before and it's hard to care about them. That said, there is something poignant in the final standoff between the head of the camp and the hermit. Unfortunately, the payoff does not justify the journey to get there.

1-3 waste of time 4-6 good 7-9 great 10 outstanding.

  • Boring

Do not waste your time on this movie unless you are a fan of the slasher genre and a completionist who wants to say you've seen them all.

    Problem 1: not enough kills.

Problem 2: kills are not entertaining.

    Problem 3: not enough gore.

    Problem 4: not enough nudity.

Problem 5: best scene in the movie -- the dinner scene -- has a weak payoff.

Problem 6: Pacing is poor so the movie drags.

I watch a lot of slasher flicks. What's most disappointing to me about this movie is there are some good ideas that go nowhere.

Followers of the genre will appreciate the genre awareness but ultimately this movie is only for hardcore slasher fans. Casual fans looking for something scary to watch will probably be disappointed.
