I always walk into a Lokesh Kanagaraj movie with only one expectation!
"Lots of important details (characters , dialogues and visuals) that drive a connected story!" I walked out of Coolie fully satisfied as there are many such details in the form of characters , dialogues and visuals right from frame 1.
Now, Lokesh is one director who is not going to spoon-feed you by telling the same information twice. Plus, he is going to be very subtle when he conveys the details and emotions. (probably to create a rewatch)
Now, I understand why the movie did not work for some. Because it's 100% Lokesh Kanagaraj movie. Blink! And you will miss the details!
But to me though, Coolie is a watch/rewatch/tri-watch material. Filled with details and subtlety and yet they still come together as one as a movie.
In my books, this is easily his top notch work from Lokesh. I will rewatch this as good as I rewatch Kaithi or Vikram.
8 Marks for Loki's writing + 2 for Rajini elevating his writing

- 1 for average cameo portion in the end.
I cannot believe how he made the 2017 version look soo good now! We were least thrilled to watch for this release, but then it took us by surprise when we saw what we saw. Important thing is, in this version, Zack snyder has made sure all those bad portions from the previous are taken out. That really made the movie look a lot lot lot better. I rated the 2017 version 5 and this one 9. That explains how much better this one is.
If you are planning to watch or just started to watch, tolerate it for first 4-5 episodes and you are in for a very engaging ride.
We started watching based on our little one's request and also because it is one of those few series that you can watch with a kid. No sensual content, gore or foul language.
The first 4-5 episodes were really amateur and me & my wife looked at each other thinking "oh god.. we have to tolerate this for next 20+ episodes".. You had everything happening in the first 4-5 episodes, from amateur acting to ordinary screenplays, not so impressive VFX & dialogues, to poor writing, direction etc
But I bet, the series will really surprise you as it moves along after 5 episodes... It felt almost as if, after the first 4-5 episodes, the producers took the director, the writer, the actors and the entire team and locked them up in a studio and said "unless you are gonna come back & fix this $h!t up going forward, am not letting you guys out !!" :-)
Pretty much everything starts to impress you from great Writing to nail-biting screenplay, awesome VFX and not to mention Acting and Dialogues... All of this together makes it really engaging watch all the way till the end of season 2. And we cannot wait to watch Season 3.
My personal fav scene was (in Severed episode), the one when they hide in a box and are caught in the space by a jupitor.. Sounds pretty dumb when you read it, but beautifully made in screen... Watch it know what i am talking about.. Final word.. Go for it
