  • A nice idea, but...

GITS is one of my favourite films, and one of the first DVD's I bought when the format was new on the scene. After watching Innocence (which looked great), I was quite ready to see something totally awesome in this update. I was wrong.

As another comment said, they should have re-done the whole film, instead of a bit here and there. I couldn't enjoy the movie when it kept switching from CGI to cel-shaded animation. Also, considering this was made FOUR years after Innocence, the CGI is awful. Most of the time Motoko looks like a plastic doll. Not cool.

The music and sound effects were re-done, sometimes better, most times not. In the original GITS if somebody was getting beaten up, you would hear them scream. In 2.0, a guy gets his ankle broken and doesn't even let out a whisper. Stupid. The main theme song (the choral piece) was re-recorded and it too lost a lot of impact.

Don't bother with this. Just watch the original.

  • A great psychological thriller!

While I like Scorsese's films, I've never been a huge fan. This, however, is something quite different.

As someone fascinated by the way our minds can play tricks on us, I was hooked after the first few scenes. A lot of questions are raised at the beginning, and if you like a story with a bit of mystery, this is for you. Its a film where small clues are given, and (If you're smart enough) you might figure out whats going on way before it finishes. Even if that is the case, it is still a very entertaining movie right to the end. It reminded me of Fight Club and Memento, so if you like them, you'll probably like this.

Its an exploration into the darker side of the human psyche. If you have no interest in, or experience of, mental illness or psychology then you might not like it. If you don't like weirdness in films then don't bother. You probably wouldn't get it.

I'll definitely be watching it again. 10/10

  • my favourite ghibli film so far

after seeing spirited away, howl's moving castle, and princess mononoke, i didn't expect this film to be any better, as all of the above were fantastic. i was very pleasantly surprised! sure the animation isn't as refined as the other films because it was made so many years before, however the story is just absolutely incredible. it's so enthralling in the way it is told, that while it may seem like so many other films i've seen (anime or live action, American or Japanese), nausicaa kept me firmly glued to the edge of my seat.

the characters fit in with the story so well, the pace and timing of the film are perfect, and it conveys it's message in a wonderful way.

if you like anime in the slightest, buy this movie. you won't be disappointed!
