While it's far from bad, I've never been a fan of this episode. It's overly camp and silly and, very obviously, is like this in order to provide a fun and easy introduction to Granada's then new Sherlock Holmes series.
It's rather too silly for my tastes, the rest of the stories in the first 'season' were far superior, but it's still worth a watch for Jeremy Brett's simply wonderful acting as Holmes.
Curiously enough, this wasn't the first episode filmed - that was The Solitary Cyclist (the fourth episode broadcast).
