I really tried to like this movie, since Sally Hawkins is a favorite. But I just could not watch much beyond about half way when it changed from really creepy to utterly ridiculous. I hate movies that depend on stupid supernatural nonsense to push the story along. BOO! It simply devolved into total stupidity.
I can tolerate anything with Scarlett Johansson. Unfortunately tolerate is the right word for this movie. Their efforts to make it sensational, robbed it of any real heart and replaced what could've been a really excellent movie with a hollow, contrived, heavy handed, and wholly unrewarding collection of highly unlikely events, following by even more highly unlikely events. To be honest, there was a lot of good CGI but the biggest and baddest monsters are its biggest and worst failures. Children and possibly teenagers will probably love this movie. Thinking, rational, adults will tire of all the shoddily designed scenes, sketch dialogs, and tiresome lunacy that destroyed the immersion.
The story and plot was easy to become invested in. It has gritty, interesting, and engaging characters. The story is compelling, violent, raw, and unpredictable. The outlaws were very bad, and the good guys felt like real people. There were many very tense and exciting scenes. The scenery and settings were authentic to a turn of the century rustic western era. The character acting was flawless throughout. I also quite enjoyed the music track. Overall, this movie was well written, well made, well acted, engaging, interesting and worthwhile. I can easily recommend it, but, it's not suitable for children.
