This iteration was an excellent tribute to the fans who have been watching since the beginning of the series. It's chock-full of past events from just about every movie and is full of surprises. But I feel like at some point this is a bit overdone and tried way too hard to tie everything together (at a couple of "reveals" during the movie, I rolled my eyes). The scenes bring the intensity I expect with some heart-pounding missions and situations. The runtime is quite a bit long and could have been cut, but it didn't feel too dragged out to where it was unenjoyable. The characters from Fallout and Dead Reckoning were fantastic as always, but I felt like additions like McCallany and Offerman felt a bit weird and unnecessary (they did a decent job, though). This could have been an all-time classic, but it repeated the same mistakes of 2 by trying way too hard. 4/5 stars.
I normally don't see too much movement in my overall rankings for Mission: Impossible films, but this one bumped up a notch since my last viewing. I just loved the overall cast so much better than Fallout, which is why I'm now slotting it higher. There were so many more characters, and top reviews are accurate that there isn't enough screentime to develop them, but I think that makes the mystery of each person that much more unique. You don't know their background as much and can't predict how they'll act in the film. Atwell was phenomenal, and both villains were outstanding and downright scary in this one. The actor who showed the least amount of charisma was Cruise. Acting-wise, this was probably his worst in the franchise, and his heart didn't seem into it, but the supporting cast and action scenes stole the show. 4.5/5 stars.
If we're evaluating this on pure action alone, this would be near the top of the entire series for me. From skydiving to helicopter chasing to bathroom fighting, they put a ton of effort into the action and fighting. But the reason this one isn't in my top three of the franchise and doesn't seem to get better every watch is that it doesn't have that heist element like it has in most films. I think that type of setting is textbook Mission: Impossible, so for them to leave it out of the plot made me downgrade it a bit. Cavill did a great job, and the supporting cast as a whole was stellar, like always. I think the bathroom fight scene might just be one of the best fight scenes they've ever done. It also runs just a bit long for me. I still think this movie is excellent, though. 4/5 stars.
