  • Who said Kolkata is a city of joy?

This film is not made by Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen or Aparna.....but a German. But though a non-Bengali, he has caught the typical Calcutta milieu in all its shades. The young laborers of a jute mill become close to each other and their friendship and love ripens into old age. Circumstances and the vagaries of life takes them to face unexpected situations. The film not treated as a melodramatic potpourri, brings out the basic human sentiments and sensibilities in a fine weave of episodes and at times makes you participate in the probing and meandering streets of city of shades and hues. All the characters are true to life and the actors portraying them have brought them out convincingly. Rightly paced and well-timed incidents create a rare experience. Good to watch.

  • Caramel was a revelation. I never thought much about Lebanese movies. this one was interesting.

Director, leading lady Nadine Labaki is highly talented and very charming. the characters are true to life and the situations are interesting. The seamstress Rose and her customer are very well portrayed and all the girls with their fads and fashions shine with Lyale standing out. Congratulations to Nadine. Hope to see more of your films. The wedding cake business of both the girls is not only interesting but metaphoric. The day to day activities are brought to life in a very beautiful way. Grown up girls and their problems in society have been well brought out with charming episodes. No where does the film have any boring or sentimental asides to disturb the spectator. All told this definitely is a new and pleasant experience.

  • Modern Western with a edge of the seat suspense

This film had a great impact on me.The desert, the people who inhabit and the start with the metaphoric wild animals and the hunter sets the pace for the ensuing drama graphically told. Every moment is breathtaking and makes you participate in the proceedings. The screenplay unfolds a wide canvas for a wild journey for the good, bad and ugly men.sometimes one feels why human beings behave in such despicable fashion without reason or remorse for their fellow beings. Riveting performances of each actor brings the true element of 'make believe' aided by excellent cinematography, editing and direction. In recent times no other film affected me so much as this one. Every lover of 'good Cinema' should watch this film.
