Unlike the other Evil Dead movies and even the TV Series, Evil Dead Rise failed somewhat to 'Rise' to the level of those aforementioned. It felt like a mashed potato of scares from the others without a meaningful thread to string them up. OK, enough of metaphors and puns. The gore was there in some parts but the plot just was not enough to keep me interested. The setting inside the building didn't provide the atmosphere. It wasn't a terrible movie, just mediocre. Movie trends these days are one dragging movie after another. The industry need talented writers, and there is a desperate need for character development.
I think this series is so disconnected pilot-wise it shows up as confused. The usual point of dissing religion is getting old and weary and the characters are presented as weird and mismatched. If this strangeness is meant to shock, it failed. In fact no one in the series is worth rooting. Jessie's character would have made a difference if he was presented as a truly conflicted preacher instead of being more a dreadful, morally bankrupt clergy. I have not read the graphic comics so I am viewing it as a newcomer. I don't know if this series is supposed to be some new dig at beliefs but it is a turn off for me. Just not my cup of tea.
Very unlikable characters including the protagonists. I kept hoping the dead eat them all. And what is that soundtrack? So bad I would opt to become a zombie than listen to it. In some ways it went the same way as The Walking Dead. Great for a few seasons then went all downhill. Black Summer is a far better zombie series than all of this. If Fear had better characters and less recycling of the same situations they get themselves into it would be a better series. I felt I was watching regurgitation of plot lines with each episode. Oh, and some running zombies would be nice.
OK, probably the only shining light is in Season 4 with Morgan, the Cowboy and the Journalist. I was beginning to enjoy it and poof! There appears those unlikable characters and back to not liking it.
