always enjoyed the atmosphere of this movie. spooky manor, wind and thunder and lightning. pleasure to watch over and over. its in my top 3 of the whole series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. if any of you enjoy this movie then the other 2 that make up my top 3 would be of interest to you. they are House of Fear and Hound of the Baskervilles. another one that has great atmosphere but doesn't have the stately manor to speak of is the Scarlet Claw. the selections i have mentioned are best viewed at evening with all the lights off. i even go as far as lighting candles to give my own surroundings similar atmosphere.

i am truly taken in by some of the scenes. such as the one where Ebenezer has just chased away the boys singing outside his office and the camera is sort of angled up towards him and he is lit from the same angle with the dark sky in the background. to me it embodied hie demeanor of a cruel and cold gentleman. i also like the scene where he is walking home after work to his lonely house off in a dark street. where he sees Marley's ghost for the first time. and inside his house i am actually surprised how someone can live in a place that is so run down and full of cobwebs and dust. well after all he is a miserable old miser now isn't he? those are just a few of the scenes that really set the mood for me for watching this picture. but i do admit the beginning is the best part of it for me for that reason.
one thing i do want to say negative about the movie. when they are at the cratchitt home and tiny Tim and Kathy come home from caroling they only give credit to tiny Tim for bringing home the money. he may be sick and lame but its still not fair to his sister.
