  • A Genuine Slice of Americana

Some documentaries exist simply to tell a story...maybe to bring an obscure injustice into the light or to highlight the story of an unsung hero. Mule Skinner Blues wants you to "feel" the story. It's often-grainy visuals suck you into those murky backwater towns of rural Florida and leaves you feeling as grimy as the film footage itself. But this is its charm and allure. It's not just telling you the story of Beanie Andrew and his cast of lovable or sketchy characters; it's making you feel the stifling heat and sweat that came together to build their dream, the hardships of their falls, and the re-building of it all. It's that rare film that captures a slice of Americana made to feel genuine by the down and dirty work it takes to make a collective dream come true.

  • A Western Trip

Just recently heard about this movie after researching what was fun to watch while, um, let's say exploring various realms of consciousness. Saw it about an hour into my altered state and it did not disappoint. As most other reviewers pointed out, there's not much plot going on here. But the visual journey it takes you on is actually quite exquisite. And the images of the trips are probably the most realistic I've ever seen on film. When you put the opening scene in context with the journey, the final moments of the film are beautiful and worth the price of admission. It's almost as if they made the movie specifically for an altered state viewing experience.

Great return to spirit for a Predator movie. My only complaint was too much CGI, but still solid. Cool story and action scenes and, being married to a Choctaw, it was great seeing so many Natives gaining exposure and seeing a strong female lead. Had been awaiting this one for years and wasn't disappointed.
