  • Pretty But Passionless

There is oh so much to like about this movie. Visually, it's stunning. The performances are all good, and I like most of the actors okay.

The caption says it all. Decent adaptation of a well-received book; this is one which could have done with a little ruthlessness when transferring it to film, however. Almost seems to be in love with itself - a little too convinced of its own splendour and profundity.

But I just couldn't really care about what became of these people, not because they were "immoral" but because they were boring. I keep on thinking maybe I should watch it again and see if it grows on me. Some movies are like that. As for the Academy Awards, well, this movie will do very well. But it sort of makes me sad to think that a pretty, passionless picture like this is considered the best that was done in an entire year. When you assemble the makings of a great film and then execute it in bloodless fashion, something like "Downton Abbey" will emerge-a movie that is somehow less than the sum of its parts.

  • Extremely GOOODDD

This is my review of The Islands (spoiler free). If you read my past reviews, I love all kinds of films going back to 2007, but especially historical.

Go and see this movie. In the cinema. As soon as possible.

Simply put, it is an excellent story of family, faith, survival, and nature.

The Islands is one of the most beautifully-shot films I have ever seen. I lost count of how many scenes I sat there in utter amazement, which is undoubtedly due to the brilliant directing and spectacular cinematography: there's no shaky-cam, no quick-cut editing, and a lot of incredibly complex shots which appear to have been completed in a single take.

Acting is marvellous, everybody showing great commitment. Imagine all these actors speaking Hawaiian. I understand they had Hawaiian translators on set. Incredible commitment.

In conclusion, brilliant film. 10/10 Jill W

  • Wonderful animated film

Who doesn't like to have their own genie? Touching film with the comic genius of Williams.

This movie should go down in history as one of the greatest animated movies of all time! I saw this film twice in the theaters. It ranks up there with movies like Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. Not only is the movie a superb hit, but the actors who play the voices of the characters do a amazing job! Robin Williams, who plays the voice of the Genie outdoes any other movies in his unique and clever voice style. If you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend that you go see it now. Rent it at Blockbuster or buy it at Wal-Mart, wherever you get it, just go and watch it today! Its a 8/10.
