There are a lot of pretentious reviews giving this film quite high ratings - certainly high for what it is.
Despite the hype this is not really a horror film - more of a slightly suspenseful ghost story/thriller which relies on a couple of jump scares (three to be exact) to try and inject some life in to a fairly pedestrian story.
It is certainly not a bad film. The acting is suburb for the most part, and the visuals center around two locations - so not much can go wrong there.
The film is worth watching provided you don't base expectations on the hype.

I am sure that people who like 'movies' are going to be left confused by the subtleties of The Substance.
The acting is superb and shows what can be achieved with good direction and talent
In fact, the quality of talent in every aspect of this film really shines through. The visuals are striking.
I didn't notice that the film was over two hours long, the story was so well paced.
This isn't a film fro everyone, but if you appreciate the art of film making this is 100% worth watching.

Although this is part of the '28' franchise (hard to believe after seeing it) as a stand alone film this just fails in so many ways.
I wouldn't call this a horror - more of a dull coming of age drama. The story is very linear with no surprises or mystery about it at all. It just drags itself along like a dead cat on a lead for 115 minutes. I really can't think of any high points or anything memorable about the film at all.
Then there is the acting. For the most part it is very good, with Ralph Fiennes being the star performance. The WORST performance was from Aaron Taylor-Johnson who plays the father. Half the time it was difficult to understand anything he was saying, and his role as father was completely unbelievable. Bad casting choice there.
The ham acting award has to go to the 'undead'. The plus side is that they did provide some comic relief to an otherwise dull film.
This film is over-hyped and mediocre at best. There is so much wrong and unbelievable in it that is has no resemblance at all to the other two '28' films, the only indication being a bit of Teletubbies at the beginning.
