This movie opens extremely slowly. Hardly anything happens, and it's all in Italian. Then some caricature baddies enter, and bloody violence ensues. Then the 70+ American steps in, to expected effect. That's it. No plot, no acting. The sound guy should be fired. Lots of extremely mumbling dialogue (can hardly hear a word uttered by Dakota Fanning) alternating with EXTREMELY loud music. Pretty Italian touristy scenes, but not much else.
Didn't care much for the original Mitchell & Webb or Peep Show, but David Mitchell is definitely one of my heroes in many other contexts. Here, his wit is completely wasted through abysmal scripts and bad make-up work. A few smirks every ten minutes or so, but otherwise nothing. If it was an ECG curve, the paitient would have been declared dead.
There's no doubt that Richard Osman is a proper clever-clogs with a sharp wit, but htis murder mystery leaves a lot to be desired.
The big problem is the basic premise. 70-somethings with full mental capacity and physical mobility just do not move in to old folks homes - they are populated by immobile and/or demented or otherwise infirm people who are no longer capable of taking care of themselves, usually in their nineties or late eighties. Also, the flats they live are enormous - and would be prohibitively expensive for any of them to rent. So, sorry, it just doesn't work.
