I didn't enjoy the subject matter of this series; however, I was transfixed by Nick Robinson (Erik). I was unfamiliar with him before watching A Teacher but he is an incredible actor. Kate Mara (Claire) is a solid actor and was great as usual but Nick's performance was outstanding and I felt he was the star of this series. His expressions and emotion had me hitting "next episode" until I finished the entire series. Overall, this show is quite depressing but I appreciated that it showed that young men also suffer emotionally when an adult abuses their position of power in the manner that Claire did.
I agree with the other review. This show was way overhyped. Johnson was promoted as a new, fresh approach to how black men are portrayed in the media but the show actually uses the same tired stereotypes that we've already seen countless times such as the male character with "anger issues." Or even worse, the nurse is overworked while her man has commitment issues and is mostly seen hanging out with his friends in the clubs. Even the white characters were stereotyped. This show literally had a "raisins in the potato salad" scene. It doesn't get much more unoriginal than that. I had high hopes for Johnson, but this was too far below mediocre for me. I love the idea of the show but the execution (writing, dialogue, and acting) was very amateur.
