NON-BL AND WESTERN M/M THAT WE'VE WATCHED TOGETHER

Not all of them are perfect films--many aren't--but all of them have elements that make them stand out among the rest: strong, original stories; believable acting; decent scares, etc. 

I'm not easily frightened, and I'm a harsh judge of horror in general, so I don't hand out praise lightly. These stood out for different reasons.

Note of caution: Gore porn, which typically uses blood and guts to cover weak plot and a lack of actual creepiness, isn't anywhere on this list, but some of the titles are still quite gory. Tread carefully if you're squeamish.

My All Time Favorite Movies (Top 10/Top 15/Top 25/Top 50)

I've noticed a lot of lists on here for gay movies with happy endings always include films that DON'T have happy endings, just because no one dies. If these were straight romances that ended in breakups, no one would call them happy endings.

So this list includes only films that have a genuinely happy conclusion. That means at the end of the movie: the main couple is still together or on their way to being together, there are no deaths between the main couple, there is no impending death (like the person has late-stage AIDS), and there is actual hope for the future.

ONLY INCLUDING gay (M/M) movies, specifically because they're so likely to have sad endings. I'm not including TV shows, which usually have happy endings (thankfully!) or movies that are inspired by TV shows, because you typically can't watch them without seeing the show. Movies that got shows later are obviously still included.

There are woefully few BL series with action and exciting plots. Here's a list of the ones that exist at the moment. Not every show on this list is necessarily good, but it all breaks the typical slice-of-life/school/work settings. Please let me know if I missed anything.

CATEGORIES:

MAFIA/MAFIA-ESQUE. Criminal organization or family.

CRIME. Illegal activity outside of mafia.

ACTION. Fighting, sparring, chase scenes, murder. This has moments to get your blood pumping for non-smutty reasons.

HORROR. Scary, gory, bloody. Not necessarily all three.

MYSTERY/THRILLER. Intrigue in the plot, even if the story itself is fairly low-key.

SUPERNATURAL. Includes supernatural elements that aren't pushed aside for slice-of-life plots. 

SCI-FI/APOCALYPTIC. Visions of the future.

LOW INTENSITY. Has elements listed above, but is slow or doesn't utilize them much.



OTHER NOTES:

REC'D. I recommend it.

HAVEN'T SEEN YET. Included because it looks like it fits or I've been told it fits. Take its placement with a grain of salt.

SECONDARY M/M. Main couple is straight, or gay content isn't as heavily featured.

This list is likely incomplete, as it's much harder to find a reliable source for the non-Asian m/m shows and movies out there. Also, dates are not always reliable on IMDB, partly due to festivals vs. general release.

Either because the plot was so good that it distracted me, or the film was so clever that it tricked me, this is a list of the few films I've seen where I didn't see the ending from a mile away, and it wasn't because the conclusion made no sense. (Keep in mind that I saw a few of these when I was young, which may also be the reason they surprised me at the time.)
