Minecraft is a schlocky, predictable, derivative film. The plot piles up nonsense in the first fifteen. There is no reason anybody with or without the foreknowledge of Minecraft lore should care too much about the characters or McGuffin-laden story.
But the effects team deserve an Oscar nom, for sure. These are the best effects in cinema this year or within the last several.
I wasn't surprised to learn it was team Weta behind the visual effects. The costumes remind me of Heavenly Creatures and the Nether pigs definitely were seeded with LOTR orc blood.
The performances are what they need to be - over the top and selling the script, no matter how hokey.

And not in a creative or clever way. The acting is five and Sean Aston and MJH are solid, but the rest of the ensemble doesn't know when to play for laughs or for gasps, and the writing is one note.
Goddamn Katherine Ryan is hilarious. The writing and deliveries are so funny. More please!
