I hoped they would have added something more unique, original, but it is sadly just a light version of part 1.
Everything is just a light version of the 1st part, our hero is not even a shadow of Maximus. The status Maximus had, the loss he had to face, his race home to save his family only to find them hung and murdered. His struggle to live on, his survival instinct and revenge.. there's nothing of that in this movie. Not to mention the strong quotes and moments Maximus had.
It's a rehash of the arena fights with a new sauce, way over the top and unbelievable this time. You thought the tigers in part 1 were pushing it, watch this movie for even more ridiculous animals.
Commodus is split up in 2 idiots but they have the same role; to be as evil and annoying as Commodus was. Pascal's character tries to be something more original but because of that its hard to judge his character in either way.
Denzel is doing a Proximo and eventhough Denzel does his thing, there's little to work with.
The music isn't bad but because this movie lacks any epic moments, the music is also not kicking in.
All in all its just fun for the action and effects, but it's not even close to the original. I seriously wonder what Ridley was thinking when he started this. Maybe just a moneymaker?

Even-though this new approach is more faithful to the comics, it never gains any traction where you think it would. Jack Kesy seems a decent pick for the role and has a typical glare/look that works for the character.
Jefferson White does a good job but borderlines overacting at some parts and even got a bit annoying for me here and there.
Hellboy often seems like a secondary character in several scenes and mainly gets tossed around a lot.
The Effects are not top notch but they never really annoyed me and overall did work in my opinion.
Overall is the atmosphere and style pretty good, it just lacks too much in character use and story.
