Other reviewers go ad nauseam about the original Lynley TV production and the book source. If they had renamed this entire production, this show would get much better ratings.
I Only saw a couple of the original and it was never my cup of tea (pun intended), but I am definitely enjoying a good, long (1.5 hours), complex, stand-alone episodes murder mystery with two actors that are not only great eye candy, but excellent at their craft. Give me a break, it's the 21st century, does anyone really want to watch a fat, smoking, fast-food loving, pint-swilling female detective? ...in addition to all that incomprehensible (to an American) class system issues from the original books?
The british detective producing factory has gotten rid of some great shows with funky pairings: Vienna Blood, Queens of Mystery, Shakespeare and Hathaway, Miss, Scarlett, Chelsea Detective(?) and MacDonalds and Dodds (the best pairing in my opinion), and replaced them with some of the slowest and boring shows ever: Marlowe Murder club, and sister Boniface, so I'm happy with anything that has any semblance of intelligence, chemistry, and complex storyline.
...and what's with Nies? Is he the head boss in every show?
Anyway, everyone, please stop complaining and comparing a show to origin material. No producer or director will ever create a show exactly like the source.

Season 1 = 7, season 2, first 4 episodes = 5, final episodes = 10. The first part of season 2 was OK. I wasn't interested in the new principal and it was dark and violent. However, the last 4 episodes were great! In fact, I've already watched several episodes again. I am so impressed at how all the story threads, from both seasons, came together, even some threads I didn't expect (The Thing).
It also had all the elements of a Tim Burton movie and Adams Family TV series and movies, that we come to love, and seemed to be missing in the first 4 episodes of Season 2; horror, gore, goth, but also a lot of humor.
Don't want to spoil it, but Episode 6 is worth visiting again and you'll know what I mean when you watch it.
All the actors, new and old are fantastic. But kudos to the interaction and dialogue between Wednesday and the original Nevermore's principle. It was priceless how they were able to bring her back in logical manner. Also Ajax (gargoyle guy) and disappearing girl. They added a lot of heart to the story. Wish Ajax and blue eyed girl could have hooked up, instead of a hint of a relationship...but maybe Season 3?... One can only hope.
