When I started thinking "okay, this is getting interesting," I noticed that there was only 15 minutes of the film left. There are a couple of other scenes that are cool, but overall it was a poorly paced execution. The sets and effects when the film gets to the catacombs are done well and give a sense of both depth and claustrophobia.
This is a film about the beginnings of the conflict between fascism and communism in Italy following WWI. The director inserted 20 minutes of what seems to be a screen test of Shia Lebouf auditioning for the role of Padre Pio.
If you knew little to nothing about Saint Pio prior to watching the film, you will know less after watching it. If this film kept its focus on the political conflict, I probably would have given it 3 stars, but in all honesty, I never would have watched it in the first place had it not been for its completely misleading title.
The dialogue in the film is confoundingly awful. Shia Lebouf reads Padre Pio's lines and writings in an American "drawl," which doesn't even seem to be his natural accent. The entire cast speaks in "modern" English, with "like" and "f-k" being thrown around like a high school cafeteria, completely removing the audience from the setting. That is not to say that people didn't swear 100 years ago, but they certainly did not speak the same way that we do currently.
Save your time and money. Do not be misled by the horrible film's title.

A bunch of scenes with the same characters doing different stuff does not a movie make. This film didn't even come close to telling a relevant story, let alone an interesting one. There are some great action scenes that occur for some reason or another. The CGI that depicts this completely nonsensical realm is really well done.
This film fit right into the 2023 theme of "movies don't have to make sense." In this year we learned that directors cannot take up the slack of striking writers.
Honestly, I don't need 600 words to describe just how pointless this film was. It's not "bad," it just doesn't tell a story.
