I was a Fantastic 4 comic fan. The movies up to this point always painted them very dark, and, too "real". That's not what I pictured my Fantastic 4 as. It was a comic. This movie finally felt like a comic book. A, great looking comic book. The characters were fairly true to their originals, except I thought The Thing was a little too touchy feely for that role. The action was typical Marvel, the acting on point, and it had lots of booms. If the plot hadn't been so thin I would have given it more stars, but 7 is very good to me.
I loved this movie. A lot more than I expected. It moves slow. Malkovitch's intentionally droning dialogue becomes annoying. Dafoe saves the whole thing and then some. The concept alone makes it worth watching. The attention to detail makes it a classic. Although fictionalized, it almost looks like a documentary on 20's motion picture filmmaking. That alone made it worth watching for me. There are several "that alones" with this movie. So much so that moving slow doesn't annoy me as much as any other movie has. As with the original, which one needs to watch to fully appreciate this movie, it is best watched late at night in a very dark room.
