I have not read the book. I saw this with people that have. They and I loved it.
I'm told there are no big changes compared to the book apart from going into a bit less detail in some areas.
As a movie, for me, it worked well. Theres a whole host of familiar faces doing their thing.
The first 20 minutes were a little slow, but then away we go.
Great story. Lovely characters. Some light hearted bits. Some serious bits. All the ingredients for a family movie are there.
If it was playing locally I probably would have gone to the cinema (it had a limited theatre run) - but it wasn't.

I enjoyed this movie from start to finish.
They've taken some liberties with the Smurf story, got lots of big name voices, and away we go.
The story is all over the place, narratively and physically, travelling to different countries for reasons that are a mystery.
Theres songs in random places, with one exception (the amazing spectacle of James Corden singing about how he has no talent!) they are forgettable and sound like they were written in the limo on the way in.
James Corden playing a character with no talent - love it!
Its so nonsensical that I went pass mere bafflement and into admiration.
No laughter at jokes. No audience reaction other than the usual ferrell children who don't know how to behave, being ignored by their even more ferrellous parents - no audience reaction to anything on the screen.
Its not a classic.
The people I was with, event he person who loves everything, absolutely hated every second of it.
A masterpiece!

No surprise for anyone who is a fan of Airplane, Airplane 2, Top Secret, Police Squad, Naked Guns 1, 2, 3, Loaded Weapon, etc.
The jokes are of the same type as the above - visual gags, plays on words, parodying movie genres, etc.
Liam Neeson is very good. Hilarious.
Pamela Anderson is a joy. Her scat scene is the best thing in the movie.
Theres lots of small laughs. Quite a few big laughs. I seemed to find it funnier than some of the people around me. Some jokes didn't land at all - theres a Buffy the vampire extended joke that didn't even get a titter (I'd read an interview with someone involved with the movie, maybe the Director, saying it did very well in a test screening - not so here - nothing).
Some great running gags - like the coffee.
For fans of wacky humour - I would recommend this.
Plus its just under 90 minutes long - the length movies should be before Marvel decided 150 minutes is the norm.
