  • Action movie depicting the pandemic of 2021

Action movie depicting the pandemic of 2021.

Due to the current pandemic I decided to re-watch Johnny Mnemonic once again. Mostly because I remember that the movie tells a story about deadly virus haunting the civilization and role of pharmaceutical companies in its development.

What a surprise! Everything the movie is about the current "clown world" is also about. Even the year 2021 is somehow correct!

The story depicted in the movie couldn't be more current than events taking place in our real world. For sure it must be just a coincidence.

How could producers know what year 2021 holds?

Gangs rule and loot the streets with violence, just like today.

Wealth gap between middle class and wealthy people widens just like Cantillion Effect and money printing widens same gap in today population.

People wear masks, protest, try to survive while the rich keep consuming luxury goods from safety of their corporate headquarters. Just like the rich consume and pollute with freely printed dollars today.

Segregation of people is the policy of this dystopian world. No different than social score and medical passports divide and catalog us today. Just wait for plugins and extensions they have in mind.

Censorship of medical research keeps status quo in place disallowing scientists to seek a cure. Is today clown world any different?

Corporate fraud is on its highest. Morality on its lowest. Journalism is non-existent or censored. Population is entitled to only few medical treatment providers and there is only one source of truth.

The movie warns us of this totalitarian crowd control.

Reminds us that our addiction to technology can enslave us, cause harm to us. Touches on subject of Artificial Intelligence and rise of machines.

It also bring some hope introducing cypherpunks and rebel scientists who resist any such future with proper use of technology and common sense.

I am amazed that in 1995 they managed to predict how important global network will be.

CGI is of course outdated now, but quite remarkable for the age.

Special mentions must go to the character of 'the preacher'. Hilarious and unique character wielding some serious symbolism on many levels.

This movie is much better today in 2021 than it was back in 1995.

  • Thank You for fantasy movie in which logic still applies. Rare thing nowadays.

Rating it below 5-8 is an act of vandalism by the book readers. And here it is why:

Matthew McConaughey managed to portray the evil character in the best possible way imaginable. He doesn't need scars, horns or any other symbols of evil on him for you to recognize and constantly feel how efficiently dangerous he is. He won't ask for permission to do harm or wait for spotlight. He will just do it whenever he feels like it.

In order to save the world from such well portrayed menace, the forces of good need to muster some serious strength and courage. Fortunately for them, and for the sake of good fight, they are blessed with some skills of their own. Those skills are used in balanced and logical fashion so the movie feels natural.

In this movie there are no unnecessary shots. No stupid one-liners. No ridiculous fancy super heroes tactics. Opponents our heroes will be facing are deadly yet still perfectly mortal. Logic applies throughout the whole movie and because of that, and because of epic landscape scenery as well, I enjoyed the movie very much.

  • Legit competition for other universes. Unfortunately critics will write what the highest bidder ask them to

This movie falls into action entertaining category and as such is far better than some critics and reviewers are trying to tell you.

The story is plain simple and predictable. An ancient evil have been awoken and.. you probably have already guessed the rest at this point. No surprise really, but that is just fine.

This movie is far better than any other Marvel or Disney movie in the sense that characters have consistent set of skills/powers which are not being bend on constant basis at the will of the director to fit his current storytelling.

The humor is well balanced. It is light and fitting the action. You won't get that tasteless impression found in Indiana Jones or Pirates of Caribbean where the viewer is literally fed with not so funny jokes at regular intervals.

Animations are nice and well polished. Also well balanced and won't hurt your eyes. Rooms and corridors are dark as they should be. Magic doesn't necessarily produce explosive effects which is a good thing in my book.

Sofia Boutella makes a great ancient beauty and fits the role perfectly.

I personally don't really enjoy Tom Cruise all that much, but in this movie he is far more authentic than let say Harrison Ford in the last installment of Indiana Jones.

Taking all of above into the account and comparing it to similar movies of the genre I think the movie is above average and it is a very good start for the fresh franchise which could disrupt the monopoly of Marvel's bonanza. Such competition is probably deemed unnecessary by the leaders in the industry therefore I have the suspicion that low ratings are of their doing. The competition in Hollywood can be far more evil and foul than any ancient being portrayed in these movies.

Overall it is an average entertainment movie, but properly executed and far more consistent than what limitless and incoherent imagination of Marvel Studio can muster.
