If you're having trouble sleeping this is a perfect movie to choose. I have always liked Kenny Rogers, so I really wanted to like this film. It turned out to be a movie filled with cliches predictable plotlines and mediocre acting. There are several very talented actors in this film but the story prevents them from reaching their potential.
There are good reasons that this film was nominated for a best picture academy award! It is one of Humphrey Bogart's best early performances and includes a standout performance by Claire Trevor. The film is filled with solid performances including very sympathetic and moving performances by the dead end kids. It is however much more than a gangster film, it raises important social issues and is a film that will move you emotionally and make you think while it is entertaining you.
This movie is exactly what it claims to be, an enjoyable Christmas romance. You know they are going to get together, but there is a lot of suspense around how and when. It has interesting and enjoyable characters along with all the expected Christmas romance movie elements. I highly recommend it for a quiet evening's enjoyment.
