The subject matter of the film and the book is a very intriguing and sad one bringing to the fore some of the victims of the latest capitalistic crisis. However the film is intolerable. Instead of using a minimalist, matter-of-fact objective approach to a subject matter that is serious and thought-provoking, miss Zhao thinks it's a good idea to overload the whole film with music and sound cues that never stop. Given that the film tries to emulate a realistic (post-neorealist?), almost documentary-like approach, any use of music not naturally produced in the scenes, is simply an exercise in film-making immaturity. I was trying to watch the film and immerse myself in the real stories of these people but CONSTANT piano and violin sound cues kept breaking my immersion to the film. Give it a break dear lady! Let the people speak! Don't drown their voices in your emotional self-importance!

Jesus Christ I thought the mini-sceries was a mediocre adaptation. But this, this illustrious piece of souless cinematic garbadge is certainly way worse. Between indifferent performances, inept editing, atrocious CGI straight out of Silent Hill 2 (the PS2 version) and no effort to frighten, it is difficult to choose which element of the movie is more inept. My money is on the direction and editing which completely fails to connect with any part of me that is human. Me and my partner looked at our phones at least 5 times during the runtime and at times looking up at the movie felt like a chore. The director claimed that he wanted to make vampires scary again. He must be a regular stand up comedian.
